Angelim Vermello (Dinizia excelsa)

A Brazillian species, well known in heavy timber applications, that can be drilled, grooved and glued with good results. This wood can be difficult to work at times, but it finishes smoothly to a high polish. It doesn't give to hand tools, so machine cutting, drilling and so forth is necessary.

Angelim Vermello is extensively used in heavy marine construction and sound walls for highway construction due to its relative low cost, workability and availability. Also known as Dinizia and Faveira, amongst other names.

Available sizes: All dimensions up to 12″x12″x20′
Typical lead time: 90 to 120 days
Uses: heavy durable construction, noise walls, piers, bridges, scaffolding, pile planking, brickboards, industrial flooring and work benches.

Angelim Pedra (Hymenolobium petraeum)

Angelim Pedra is to Brazilians what Oak is to Americans. It is the most commonly used species inside Brazil, favored for its “Stones” or dark brown stain-like patches that appear throughout the wood. Originally brought to the US for use in truck decking as a substitute for Apitong, it is now being offered as one of the lower cost alternatives to Ipe. Angelim Pedra, however, must be kiln dried to achieve fiber stability. Angelim Pedra has a tendency to grain raise when exposed to weather, which is not a problem for truck decking but does not in our experience make for a great residential decking product.

Available sizes: kild dried up to 2″x12″; air dreid up to 12″x12″x20′
Typical lead time: 90 to 120 days
Uses: heavy durable construction, noise walls, piers, bridges, scaffolding, pile planking, brickboards, truck and trailer decking, industrial flooring and work benches.

Azobe (Lophira alata)

Features a very durable heartwood that is resistant to acids, can be dressed to a smooth finish and has good weathering properties. Good resistance to taredo attack, but is only moderately resistant to termite attack. This wood is extremely resistant to preservative treatments, both in the heartwood and the sapwood.

Available sizes: air dreid up to 12″x12″x36′
Typical lead time: 90 to 120 days
Uses: heavy, durable construction work, harbor work, heavy-duty flooring, parquet flooring and railroad crossties.

Tatajuba (Bagassa guianensis)

This Brazillian species is rated as very durable and air dries well with little warp or checking. It works fairly well and finishes smoothly.

The heartwood of this species starts off yellow, often streaked with brown, and becomes a lustrous golden brown upon exposure. Like Teak, it is highly resistant to moisture absorption.

Available sizes: to 4″x12″ at up to 20′ long.
Typical lead time: 90 to 120 days
Uses: heavy timber/construction, turnery, decking and furniture components, as well as boat construction.
