Long Beach, NY: Ipe Boardwalk ‘Essentially Non-Combustible’

The following message was posted on the Long Beach, NY website after a series of devastating events involving their boardwalk. Their choice to rebuild using Ipe highlights the city’s interest in preventing future fires by choosing superior Ipe wood. As you may have heard, a devastating fire destroyed the newly rebuilt boardwalk and businesses in the New Jersey communities of Seaside Heights and Seaside Park. We know well the heartbreak involved with the destruction of our beloved boardwalk by Superstorm Sandy, and we can certainly empathize with the residents of those two Jersey shore towns in their loss. Our hearts go out to them. With that said, the City of Long Beach would like to reassure our residents that the same fate is not likely for our almost-complete, brand new boardwalk. It has been determined that damage caused by Superstorm Sandy to the electrical system of the Seaside Heights/Seaside Park boardwalk was responsible for starting the fire. Since the new Long Beach boardwalk was totally redesigned and rebuilt from the ground up, it has an entirely new electrical system. The old electrical system, which suffered severe damage from seawater flooding, was removed and replaced. Additionally, the Seaside Heights/Seaside Park boardwalk, just like the old Long Beach boardwalk, was constructed of Southern Yellow Pine. A building material’s flammability is measured is by its flame spread rating, which, according to the Louisiana State Fire Marshal, is determined by: “how far and how fast flames spread across the surface of the test sample. In this test, a sample of the material 20 inches wide and 25 feet long, is installed as ceiling of...

Boardwalk HCX Composite Decking

What happens when a Premier Supplier of Boardwalk Decking finds the greatest composite decking technology? Timber Holdings through cooperative partnership with a leading plastics technology company has developed a state of the art commercial grade structural composite decking product for heavy traffic commercial Boardwalk, deck, dock and Marine applications. And it’s made with post-industrial recycled polymers and re-used wood fiber in the core. Did you ever wonder why your grandmothers Tupperware is still usable? The answer is polypropylene. Polypropylene has excellent dimensional stability and stain resistance… that’s why the lid still fits and it’s not stained orange from your tomato sauces either! Polypropylene has long been recognized as a superior polymer technology to the post-consumer-waste polyethylene used in most residential decking products. So why don’t they use polypropylene in all composite decking? Because it costs a little more than polyethylene to process (higher working heat range, more energy) and only balances with the extreme durability and significantly longer life cycle. A quality to value premium which is easily recognized and quickly realized for projects that are expected to perform across generations like boardwalks. What makes Iron Woods Boardwalk HCX stand apart from other composite decking products is the structural strength we have been able to achieve through the use of our exclusive polypropylene HCX technology which allows designers to develop specifications around HCX as a structural element and not just a surfacing material.
